Manic Mages
A downloadable game for Windows
Project Summary:
Software used:
- Engine: UE5.2
- Audio: FL Studio
For this project I was tasked with creating a local multiplayer game in Unreal Engine. I wanted to create a game where the player had a wide variety of options in their playstle and had the ability to create powerful combinations by using abilities/items that synergised with eachother
Contributions:
I designed and implemented all of the gameplay systems present in the game. This includes the system that allows players to choose their own build, all of the different passives/abilities that the player can use, as well as the different weapons that the player can equip. This aspect of the project taught me a lot of important concepts when creating complex systems in unreal, such as how to effectively use interfaces, when to best utilise both components and classes, as well as effectively managing different aspects of the game when more than one player is present
I also designed all 4 levels present in the game (tutorial, dungeon, tower, and library). I took a lot of inspiration from games like Quake and Doom Deathmatch when designing these levels, having a mixture of long sightlines, small areas, and open arenas, allowing for any build to be viable on any map, encouraging counterplaying over counterpicking
For visuals. I created the post process shader to give the game both cel shaded lighting and a pixelated art style. I also created the animation blueprint using animations I sourced from a variety of online resouces. 3D models were either sourced from the Unreal Marketplace (character meshes, weapons), or Sketchfab (props), Textures were sourced from a variety of Creative Commons licenced online repositories. I used niagara systems to create the special effects in the game, such as the fireballs, weapon beams, and projectile trails.
For sound. I composed the soundtrack that can be heard in FL studio. I also used synthesisers to create some of the sound effects heard in the game, some effects were sourced from FreeSound.com and edited in audio software, and others were default effects within Unreal Engine
